Ellie.ai 8.7 Product update: Naming Conventions

Release
Jari Jaanto
CTO

We’ve all seen them: data assets with names born under deadline pressure — NewModel2, Customer_final_REAL_v3, Test123. They might work for the moment… but tomorrow they’ll come back to bite.

From scattered rules to built-in guidance

Ellie now includes a built-in Naming Conventions feature that applies across models, entities, and attributes.

Admins can set the rules in Admin Tools → Naming Conventions. Once defined, they’re enforced everywhere. When creating or editing names, users get immediate warnings if it breaks the rules that Admin has set — for example, if a prefix or suffix is missing, or the text case is wrong. Duplicate names remain blocked, just as before.

The rules themselves are simple but powerful, and each organization can decide which ones to apply.
Here are some common examples:

  • Prefixes such as DIM_ for dimensions or FCT_ for facts
  • Suffixes like _ID or _DT
  • Text case styles from snake_case to camelCase to PascalCase — and several more to choose from

Whenever you create or edit a name, Ellie checks it on the spot and shows a gentle warning if it doesn’t fit rules that Admin has set. You can still save and move on, but you’ll know immediately when a name drifts off-script. Duplicate names remain blocked, just as before.

Clarity without slowing down

For business users, consistent names remove the guesswork. If you see DIM_Customer_ID, you know exactly what you’re looking at — not a mystery field called Cust123. For technical users, clear and predictable naming keeps pipelines healthy, avoids endless casing debates, and reduces downstream errors.

Think of it as spell-check for your data models: light-touch, non-blocking, and just annoying enough to save you from bigger problems later. Ellie’s way of reminding: “This doesn’t match your naming rules.”

Looking ahead

Naming Conventions are rolling out in Ellie during September. Next time you’re about to type Customer_final_REAL_v3, Ellie will be there to politely remind you when a name doesn’t match the rules.

With Ellie.ai, keeping names consistent is no longer a trade-off between speed and governance — it’s part of a bigger shift toward modeling that’s faster, clearer, and truly collaborative. From conceptual models to logical structures, reusable attributes, and integrations with governance tools, Ellie helps teams design better data products together.
